SUPERMARKET SHELVES

Benzaldehyde is a chemical found in nature in many foods. It helps give coffee and cocoa their characteristically pleasant aromas, and is also widely used in the chemical industry. Less known is the fact that benzaldehyde has shown significant cancer-fighting abilities. In the 1970s, Japanese scientists used a distillate of ordinary figs to successfully treat cancer in mice. They eventually found that the active ingredient in this distillate was ordinary benzaldehyde, present in mere one-part-per-million concentrations. Building on this finding, in 1985, Dr. M. Kochi and colleagues reported in the USNational Cancer Institute's own Cancer Treatment Reports (69:533-537) that a `gluconated' form of benzaldehyde (called BG) caused an "overall objective response rate [of] 55 percent. Seven patients achieved complete response, 29 achieved partial response, 24 remained stable, and 5 showed progressive disease." In 1990, Dr. Tatsumura and colleagues at Toyama University reported similar results (41.7 percent responses). In all cases, the treatment was free of toxicity. It is thus documented, safe, inexpensive and generally unavailable in America. How is it possible that such a promising anti-cancer agent is unused here? Why hasn't the NCI publicized these results as they have, say, the interleukin-2 or taxol trials? One reason may be the lack of incentive for pharmaceutical companies to become involved in research on natural food constituents. It currently costs over $230 million to shepherd a new drug through the FDA's approval maze. This compels pharmaceutical companies to seek out only expensive, patentable drugs, to the detriment of non-patented agents like benzaldehyde.

Benzaldehyde is remarkably cheap about $8 an ounce at chemical supply houses. (Such companies do sell it, but may require a pledge that it is not to be used for medicine - only for laboratory research.) Since the average person needs less than a gram per day [see below], the cost per year, astonishingly, would be about $2.00, or less than a penny a day.

Another factor is benzaldehyde's close link to amygdalin (a.k.a. laetrile), the bete noire of the cancer establishment. Amygdalin, found in apricot kernels, etc. breaks down into benzaldehyde, glucose, and hydrogen cyanide in the body. Gluconated benzaldehyde (BG) is essentially laetrile without the hydrogen cyanide.... Readers seeking treatment for cancer should seek out competent medical help, including doctors open to alternative treatments. You can get benzaldehyde by eating figs, apple seeds, peach or apricot kernels. It is also found in almond extract. Almond extract is available in most supermarkets. One teaspoon of almond extract usually contains approximately 90 mg of benzaldehyde.

When taken internally, 1.7 to 2 ounces of pure benzaldehyde can be fatal. It can slow down your central nervous system and cause respiratory failure.

Electrochemical Therapy & Colloidal Silver 

"Research proves cancer cells cannot exist in a strong magnetic field"

Robert O. Becker discovered that passing a positive electrical current at a voltage harmless to normal cells - using silver anodes (only silver was effective) - through a wound had the effect of speeding up healing.His comment on this result: "what we had actually done was rediscover the fact that silver killed bacteria, which had been known for centuries." However, previous therapies based on silver were inefficient and correspondingly difficult to use and not as effective as they could be. The method Becker used - using a very low voltage positive electric charge was very efficient. More important, however, than the fact that it  helped bones to mend - it also cured cancer by turning them back into normal cells!

"I also had a patient with a severe, chronic bone infection who had an associated cancer in the wound. He refused amputation, which would have been the treatment of choice, and insisted that I treat his infection with the silver technique. After three months, the infection was under control, and the cancer cells appeared to have changed back to normal. When I last heard from him eight years after the treatment, he was still fine." 

So... But this electrochemical therapy is one thing. Is colloidal silver - a  mixture of minute particles of silver created electromagnetically - also of use in cancer treatment? There are a number of people who are jumping up and down about colloidal silver and saying it is so safe it can be used with babies. Certainly, I am convinced that silver has a general anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-parasite egg effect that makes it very interesting for cancer patients. To put it another way, I would certainly use it if I had AIDS, any viral problem and, in cases of cancer, it could be sprayed on to any surface cancer or taken into the body by way of a douche or retention enema - or simply drunk.

But I would not use it for long term treatment. If it is hostile to bacteria, it will be hostile to good bacteria - a very good reason against long term use. So, if used, you should supplement with L. acidophilus and L. bulgaricus (as in the case of any antibiotic).

The safety question has not been absolutely proven. There is a condition known as argyria which can result from long term use of silver. This leaves the skin looking metallic grey. However, the problem is purely cosmetic. No organic damage has been shown to result from long term use of silver. It is also highly unlikely that the concentrations of silver found in colloidal silver - 5 parts per million - is likely to result in any ill effects.

New thoughts on colloidal silver

I have used colloidal silver and found it to be very effective against herpes blisters on the lips and ear infections. Also, I have been taking a glassful a day of colloidal silver (5ppm) for a while with no ill effects (I was persuaded to do so by a man in Australia who has been doing this for three years and has suffered no ill effects – he says he feels full of energy and hasn’t had a cold in three years). I make my own colloidal silver (otherwise it is prohibitively expensive. There are a number of makers on the market costing around US$129-149. I use Bob Beck’s. There is clearly no danger of argyria – this was a red herring propagated by the Against Health Fraud people. Also, there does not appear to be any negative effect on good intestinal bacteria so supplementation with acidophilus may not be necessary

Green Tea

Green tea really does protect against cancer and retards cancer spread, according to Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute. The reason is that it contains a compound called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG for short) which blocks an enzyme needed for angiogenesis - the creation of blood supply. Without this blood supply , solid cancer tumours cannot grow. For this reason drinking green tea during pregnancy is a definite no-no. The recommended dose for cancer treatment is three or four cups a day, everyday.

Fulvic acid

There appears to be a lot of excitement about this new supplement that has been pioneered by the organic farming business. The only drawback appears to be that it must not be mixed in any way with chlorinated water. There are a number of products on the market claiming to contain fulvic acid - mainly colloidal mineral mixes. The only supplier (that I was able to find) that states clearly the fulvic acid content of its product is Vital-Earth Minerals whose liquid mineral supplement consists of 42% fulvic acid. Haelan: a soy-based cancer cure?

Haelan is a concentrated soybean product that appears to have significant anti-cancer activity. It is well known that Japanese and Chinese have significantly lower levels of most forms of cancer and this is often attributed to their high soy intake. Soy is high in isoflavones which are known to be a broad ranging anti-cancer compound. They are also excellent anti-oxidants. The main isoflavone is Genistine. It is able to inhibit the growth of most cancers. It obstructs the activity of tyrosine protein kinase, an enzyme that stimulates the growth of cancer cells. Without this enzyme the cancer growth is slowed or stopped. Genistine also inhibits the growth of blood vessels needed to supply a tumor with necessary oxygen and nutrients (called angiogenesis) which keeps a tumor very small or even prevents it. According to Donna Sage "Genistine not only inhibits cancer growth, it can reverse it. It can stimulate a cell to go from being cancerous to being normal through a process called differentiation."

Haelan has shown significant benefits (not just to cancer patients but for many other ailments including heart disease) and a number of people claim to have been cured using this product. The only drawback is cost. At around US$50-60 a bottle it isn’t cheap. A bottle a day for cancer patients is the recommended dose. But half a bottle a day would halve the cost! And let’s face it, if it works then it’s worth it.

Kombucha

Kombucha is a fungus that looks like a pale pancake that has the ability to transform heavily sugared tea into a health drink over a period of 5-7 days. It has been around for a long time - a few thousand years - and is highly regarded by the Koreans and Russians. Communities where the resulting drink is consumed are credited with long healthy lives. It is claimed that kombucha discourages cancer, lengthens the lifespan, reduces the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation as well as being good for a number of other problems: energy, sleep and menopausal problems. A good sourcebook is Miracle Fungus by Harald Tietze. 

There is a kombucha network which distributes kombuchas free of charge - one thing you should know about the kombucha is that it replicates itself once every seven days so you will soon be looking to pass on kombuchas to your own network of friends.

If you do a net search on kombucha you will find a number of warnings. To what extent these are valid it is hard to say. Certainly, a word of caution is due: make sure there are no additional molds on the kombucha and that when letting the drink mature - it is covered in such a way as to prevent possibly dangerous stray molds from entering the liquid. I have myself been drinking kombucha for about six months. Has it done anything for me? Hard to say - certainly nothing earth shaking. It does seem to be associated with very good and frequent bowel movements - a very positive healthy sign. It is a pleasant drink - I add a little ginger to the mix.

Lyprinol 

Lyprinol is the brand name of a marine extract of the New Zealand green-lipped mussel manufactured by McLab (distributed internationally by Pharmalink).

Lyprinol was brought to the market as a treatment for asthma and rheumatism. It works as a lipoxygenase inhibitor – which was very interesting for prostate cancer researchers because that is exactly what they were looking for. Trials are now starting to determine whether or not it does have the hoped for effect on prostate cancer. It will be years before the result is known.

Unfortunately, it appears McLab have taken the product off the shelves because once news leaked out in Australia and New Zealand, many cancer patients quite understandably decided not to wait for science to deliberate. There was a run on the product and the medical establishment reacted accordingly. However, it may find its way back on the shelves so prostate cancer patients should keep an eye on the situation.

There are other products claiming to contain the active ingredients found in green lip mussel extract. The problem is that the active ingredients are highly unstable and only McLab have the process needed to stabilise them – a process developed by Professor Kosuge of Shizouka University in Japan.

Magnesium citrate for liver cleansing

A Canadian reader gives this advice: I have found liver cleanses to be very rejuvenating and purifying… but I have some advice to those who are doing liver cleanses - don't use EPSOM SALTS, which in most cases are available in only the "for external use only" grade. buy a bottle of magnesium citrate, 300 ml size, glass, used by internists/radiologists as purge before exploratory radiography! It costs only $3, tastes really good (like a citrus pop), and does not give nausea like the epsom salts. There is 15 grams of mg in that bottle, more than enough to force open all the bile ducts. Noni Juice

Noni contains a very high concentration of a substance called proxeronine. When taken into the body this is converted into xeronine. 

Xeronine is a fundamental substance. Dr Ralph Heinicke, who studied noni extensively while at the Pineapple Research Institute says: "Xeronine is so basic to the functioning of proteins, we would die without it. Its absence can cause many kinds of illness. Conversely, increasing the production of xeronine in our bodies can help cure various manifestations of disease such as cancer, senility, arthritis, high blood pressure and low blood pressure. If a problem is caused by a failure in the production of xeronine, flooding the body with a proxeronine will solve the problem." 

Xeronine has a wide range of activities due to the fact that many proteins need to combine with it before they can do their jobs - and proteins provide most of the structure of the body right down to the cellular level. Proteins also enable nutrients to pass through cell membranes. They also act as hormones necessary for the co- ordination of bodily processes. They act as antibodies for the immune system and they act as enzymes. Many of these proteins can not perform their duties properly, if at all. without the presence of xeronine - and, guess what, our own production of xeronine declines with age! 

Dr Mona Harrison, formerly assistant dean of Boston University School of Medicine and Chief Medical Officer at Washington DC General Hospital, had the following experience with noni: "I sent noni to several patients around the country. I told them to try it but didn't let them know there was anything extraordinary about it. The following results have been documented by other physicians and are not just my own observations. One of my patients was suffering from kidney cancer with metastases...to her lung and brain. She had been given only two weeks to live...she took the noni and it cleared her lung lesions...another patient had liver cancer and a swelling of fluid in the abdominal area. After seven days on noni juice this ascitic fluid cleared up completely." These two patients, both considered terminal, were still alive several months later and showing significant improvement in their symptoms. 

Dr Neil Solomon decided to look at 8,000 patients who had taken noni juice under medical supervision for a wide variety of medical problems and came to the conclusion that 78% had been `helped'. For the 847 cancer patients in the study the figure was slightly less at 67%. Being `helped' is a vague term and does not mean cured. However, Solomon states that one of the effects of noni juice is that it "inhibits precancer function and growth of cancer tumours." He also made the point that: "The majority of people who did not see optimal results after taking noni did not take noni long enough or in high enough doses." 

According to Dr Steven Hall "For men with prostate cancer, when noni was added to their conventional treatment, the PSA, a blood marker for prostate cancer activity, usually dropped. On one occasion, it dropped all the way to zero." 

Experiments with mice with cancer tumours show that life expectancy is more than doubled. 

As it is a detoxifier, some side effects may be felt when starting to take noni juice. Generally these are reported to be very slight and may amount to little more than belching and itchiness. Solomon estimated that less than 3% of his sample of 8,000 patients experienced side-effects of any kind. 

Noni juice is also a pain inhibitor of great power - estimated to be 75% as effective as morphine without the problem of addiction. And women with PMT have experienced a great deal of relief by using noni. This will be of interest to those patients whose cancers have progressed too far for orthodox treatment. Other pain relievers are large doses of vitamin C and hydrazine sulphate. 

Some patients who used noni juice while having chemotherapy have reported that their symptoms were alleviated to a significant degree. 

Morinda Inc is the marketer of Tahitian Noni Juice which is a registered trademark. They have a monopoly of all Noni fruit production in French Tahiti. This allows them, they claim, to eliminate the use of artificial fertilizers. Morinda also supply the noni juice that scientific researchers use. So the claims doctors make will almost certainly come from Tahitian Noni Juice. However, some people object to the fact that it is a) fairly expensive and b) marketed as part of a multi-level marketing scheme so that if you are a good salesman you could have your noni and drink it free (and even make some money). You can find registered distributors by simply doing a search for noni juice. 

One problem I have with the Morinda corporation is that they prevent distributors from saying anything clear and honest about the medical benefits of noni juice. I appreciate that the US legal system is fraught with pitfalls in this area but one would like to see a company with a bit more guts.

However, you can buy Hawaiian noni juice at a lower cost on a straight retail basis. Bobbie Burdett says she has tried both, is very sensitive to any changes relating to dietary input, and has felt no difference going from Tahitian to Hawaiian source noni juice – so there you are. Papaya Leaf

The papaya - also known as pawpaw - is a fruit with many healing qualities. Its skin will quickly heal wounds and the fruit is known to help maintain a healthy digestive system. Now it is claimed - by Australians living on the Gold Coast - that papaya leaves can be turned into a powerful anti-cancer medicine. Chemicals in the leaves are considered to be more powerfully toxic than many of the modern chemotherapy drugs, without the side-effects. Australian Stanley Sheldon claims he cured his lung cancer in this way in 1962. Other claims involving other cancers have also been made. The method of preparation is to take eight or so papaya leaves and put them in water, bring them to a boil and let simmer for two hours. Probiotic breakthrough

It has been well-established that supplementation with `good' bacteria is extremely beneficial for cancer patients - in theory. The problem has not been with the bacteria - which are known to  be good - but with the supplements, which are extremely variable in quality. The problem is that the bacteria are very sensitive and many if not most of the bacteria originally present in any capsule may have been killed before it is ingested. In the laboratory at Matthias Rath, Inc., we have conducted research with live cells to provide answers to various scientific questions. Once we understood the mechanism by which cancer cells metastasized, there was one critical question that our researchers sought to answer: How could we naturally inhibit the invasion of cancer cells through collagen and connective tissue in a way that would enhance the body's own capacity for managing disease? In seeking this answer, our researchers designed an experiment so that they could first investigate the ability of cancer cells to digest through a collagenous matrix and then develop a method to control it. The most powerful nutrient combination contained vitamin C, the amino acids L-lysine and L-proline, and a polyphenol fraction of green tea known as Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG). Shark cartilege:anti-angiogenesis?

May 1997: The world's media announces that the cure for cancer has been found. Dr Judah Folkman, a researcher at Children's Hospital in Boston has shown great results with the combination of two drugs angiostatin and endostatin. Essentially they work by starving the tumour of its blood supply. Endostatin is actually a chemical substance that is naturally produced by tumours to stop other tumours developing in the body. Once this substance is no longer produced - ie if a tumour is removed from the body - other tumours in the body are no longer controlled. This explains the known fact that some patients suddenly become riddled with cancer once a main tumour has been surgically removed. Folkman's achievement meant that he has pipped researchers at Texas and elsewhere who have been working on other anti-angiogenesis factors (angiogenesis is the process by which a cancer tumour creates a network of blood vessels to fuel its growth - foetuses do the same). The age of chemotherapy is dead - we are witnessing the start of the age of the anti-angiogenesis factor. That atleast is the theory.In my opinion this is not hype. I do believe that a cure for cancer has been found. In fact, it was found years ago. The search has not, in fact, been for an anti-angiogenesis factor that works. Rather, it has been a search for an anti-angiogenesis factor that is patentable. One anti-angiogenesis factor that has quite a bit of anecdotal support is shark cartilage. This product similarly interferes with the tumour's ability to build a blood supply to support the growth of the tumour.

Snow Fungus from Tibet is used in milk to create a yogurt-like product. Taken on a daily basis it is claimed to help healing. Apparently it is one of the cures that ancient Chinese and modern Kung Fu guys swear by. I don't have any further info on it. Have you heard of it? Sunlight can reduce breast cancer risk

A study comparing the health habits of 133 breast cancer patients with women who did not have the disease found that exposure to sunlight lowered the risk of breast cancer by 30 to 40 percent or more (Cancer Weekly Plus, 11/17/97). This might explain why women who live in the southern states below Kansas tend to get breast cancer significantly less than those who live in the North, said Esther John, an epidemiologist from Northern California Cancer Center.

Southern states bask in the sun longer than Northern states, so Southerners get more rays. It is suggested that winter sunlight is so weak in the North, she said, that people living at or above 40 degree north latitude do not get enough sun from November to February to make the required levels of vitamin D. Boston, for example, is at 42 degree north latitude. "It's possible that all it takes is 10 or 15 minutes outside in bright sunlight to get a benefit," she said. "And that's just casual exposure. The sunlight you get on your face and neck and arms and hands when you're regularly dressed."

So while the exact dose of sunlight needed is not known, a brief outdoor stroll might do it. The amount needed to protect against breast cancer is probably not enough to cause skin damage, she added. Sunscreens that block ultraviolet rays would also block the formation of vitamin D. Dietary sources of vitamin D include milk, tuna, liver, egg yolk, salmon, eggs, margarine and cod liver oil. 

In addition to its preventive effects, vitamin D has been shown to increase survival chances in women with advanced breast cancer, according to British studies funded by the Association for International Cancer Research. "Thirteen women with normal or high levels of active vitamin D survived the six-month test period but, sadly, in those with low levels, five out of 13 died within six months," said professor Barbara Mawer of the Manchester Royal Infirmary in central England.

However supplementing with vitamin D should not be overdone. As large doses of vitamin D cause excessive blood levels of calcium and potentially serious side effects such as kidney stones. You probably should not get more than 800 IU total daily.

Urine

Drinking the urine from a woman in the first ten weeks of her pregnancy may have powerful anti-cancer effects. Experiments with mice have found such an effect. Scientists trying to extract pure chemicals with the same effect have finally managed to replicate the same effect as the unprocessed urine, full as it is with a complex mix of chemicals. Scientists have found that these chemicals in the urine of a newly pregnant woman also act against the AIDS virus. What we need now is a service for the collection of all this urine!

Wormwood basis for a cancer-fighting pill

Wormwood, a herb noted for its deworming properties and part of the Hulda Clark regime has now been cited as a potent anti-cancer treatment in its own right. (Environmental News Network report (November 28, 2001)

Annual wormwood, Artemisia annua L. A nontoxic pill that could be taken on an outpatient basis to combat breast cancer or leukemia sounds like a fantasy, but the treatment is becoming a reality due to the investigation of a University of Washington research team into an ancient Chinese remedy for malaria.

Two bioengineering research professors at the University of Washington have rediscovered wormwood as a promising potential treatment for cancer among the ancient arts of Chinese folk medicine. Research professor Henry Lai and assistant research professor Narendra Singh have exploited the chemical properties of a wormwood derivative to target breast cancer cells with surprisingly effective results.

A study in the latest issue of the journal Life Sciences describes how the derivative killed virtually all human breast cancer cells exposed to it within 16 hours. "Not only does it appear to be effective, but it's very selective," Lai said. "It's highly toxic to the cancer cells but has a marginal impact on normal breast cells."

Environmental risk factors for cancer are many. Lifetime exposure to the female hormone estrogen and estrogen-mimicking chemicals such as some pesticides and herbicides has been linked to an increase in breast cancer risk.

In 1991, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified the pesticide DDT as a possible human carcinogen, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified DDT as a probable human carcinogen. The manufacture of PCBs, the oily liquids or solids used as coolants and insulators, was stopped in the United States in 1977 because of concerns that exposure increases the risk of cancers, but PCBs are still found in the environment.

Most Americans are exposed every day to air toxins emitted by motor vehicles, substances that the EPA says have been proven to cause cancer in humans. "Benzene, says the EPA, "is a known human carcinogen, while formaldehyde; acetaldehyde; 1,3-butadiene; and diesel particulate matter are probable human carcinogens."

The EPA has now classified 1,3-butadiene, a gas used commercially in the production of resins and plastics, as a known human carcinogen.The use of the bitter herb wormwood is nothing new. Used for centuries to rid the body of worms, it is also an ingredient in the alcoholic beverage absinthe, now banned in most countries.Artemisinin, the compound that Lai and Singh have found to fight cancers, isn't new either. It was extracted from the plantArtemesia annua L., commonly known as wormwood, thousands of years ago by the Chinese, who used it to combat the mosquito-borne disease malaria. The treatment with artemisinin was lost over time but rediscovered during an archaeological dig in the 1970s that unearthed recipes for ancient medical remedies.

Now widely used in Asia and Africa to fight malaria, artemisinin reacts with the high iron concentrations found in the malaria parasite. When artemisinin comes into contact with iron, a chemical reaction ensues, spawning charged atoms that chemists call free radicals. The free radicals attack cell membranes, breaking them apart and killing the single-cell parasite. About seven years ago, Lai began to hypothesize that the process might work with cancer, too. "Cancer cells need a lot of iron to replicate DNA when they divide," Lai explained. "As a result, cancer cells have much higher iron concentrations than normal cells.

When we began to understand how artemisinin worked, I started wondering if we could use that knowledge to target cancer cells." Lai devised a potential method and began to look for funding, obtaining a grant from the Breast Cancer Fund in San Francisco. Meanwhile, the UW patented his idea. The thrust of the idea, according to Lai and Singh, was to pump up the cancer cells with maximum iron concentrations, then introduce artemisinin to selectively kill the cancer.

In the current study, after eight hours, just 25 percent of the cancer cells remained. By the time 16 hours had passed, nearly all the cells were dead. An earlier study involving leukemia cells yielded even more impressive results. The cancer cells were eliminated within eight hours. A possible explanation might be the level of iron in the leukemia cells. "They have one of the highest iron concentrations among cancer cells," Lai explained. "Leukemia cells can have more than 1,000 times the concentration of iron that normal cells have."

The next step, according to Lai, is animal testing. Limited tests have been done in that area. In an earlier study, a dog with bone cancer so severe it couldn't walk made a complete recovery in five days after receiving the treatment. But more rigorous testing is needed. If the process lives up to its early promise, it could revolutionize the way some cancers are approached, Lai said. The goal would be a treatment that could be taken orally on an outpatient basis. "That would be very easy, and this could make that possible," Lai said. "The cost is another plus: At $2 a dose, it's very cheap. And with the millions of people who have already taken artemisinin for malaria, we have a track record showing that it's safe." Whatever happens, Lai said, a portion of the credit will have to go to unknown medical practitioners, long gone now. "The fascinating thing is that this was something the Chinese used thousands of years ago," he said. "We simply found a different application."
