Information

Anyone looking for good cancer sites - for example, by typing 'cancer' into any search engine - will be stunned at how many there are. Rather than try to replicate the work that many others have put into creating good links for people seeking good quality cancer information I have simply listed a number of `hotlinks'. These are sites that already contain good lists of useful connections.

So browse these sites for easy access to a wide range of links and comments.

1. Two sites that I have found to be straightforward to use and which provide very interesting links have all - interestingly - been developed by people who know what it's like to want information - people with cancer. Check out these sites:

2. This site connects you to Ralph Moss and his Cancer Chronicles. Ralph Moss is the dean of the alternative medicine movement - see Recommended Books page 3. Canceraction is the name of a new UK cancer website supporting the approach known as orthomolecular medicine - i.e medicine that does not use powerful drugs. A very useful site for advice and UK links. Go to  4. For the best cancer books resource go to People Against Cancer at  5. Other useful sites are
  • Steve Dunn's Cancerguide site. Look out especially for the article ` The median isn't the message' by Stephen Jay Gould www.cancerguide.org
  • The Wellness Web, containing interesting discussion of many alternative ideas and issues www.wellweb.com
  • CancerNet provides the latest updates on orthodox treatments for both doctors and patients. Get both at www.nci.nih.gov
For detailed information about orthodox assessment and treatment of specific cancers go to the National Cancer Institute's pdq files. You can read both the summaries for patients and the detailed reports for health professionals go to http://cancernet.nci.nih.gov/clinpdq/pif.html.

Message Boards

One way to get good up-to-date information is to connect to message boards. There are some very hardnosed masculine sites like the alt.support.cancer site which you can find at www.dejanews.com . You can do refined searches for specific cancers. This is a good site for ideas and links.

Another excellent site specifically for women with breast cancer is Swallows. This site as well as providing discussion has a website with an impressive array of links and resources.

Other discussion groups for leukemia, cervical, prostate, children's, and ovarian cancer can be found at

A USEFUL list of e-mail discussion groups can be found at http://www.oncolink.upenn.edu/forms/listserv3.html

Support Groups

BACUP has a large database of British support groups which can be found at http://www.bacup.org.uk/

Anthroposophical Medicine

More than 1,000 doctors in Europe follow the medical principles developed by Rudolph Steiner ( a follower of Goethe) known as Anthroposophical approach (literally the wisdom of the human body). This approach is very firmly based on herbal and supplement support. A recent article in the British press quoted the case of Mrs Pam Evans, 54, who had breast cancer. She refused chemotherapy and instead had mistletoe injections (iscador) directly into the tumour. The tumour disappeared and lymph nodes cleared. The injections were supplemented by a rigid vegan diet, vitamins, acupuncture and
relaxation techniques. Mrs Evans said: "I don't think you should rely on any one alternative therapy. You should do a package that addresses the whole body".
